Cascade vs After Effects: which should producers use for visualizers?

Last updated: August 24, 2026

Use Cascade when the job is a beat-synced short-form visualizer from your own audio and footage. Use After Effects when the job is original motion graphics, compositing, or keyframed animation. Cascade is not a plugin host and not a replacement for AE’s toolset. After Effects is not a posting habit for a beat catalog unless you already live in it.

What Cascade is

Cascade is a web app for music producers: upload a beat, footage, and an optional video style, then export a vertical MP4 for Reels, Shorts, and TikTok. Video style matching and Creative DNA are product layers on that campaign workflow. Your sound and visuals stay yours.

What After Effects is

Adobe After Effects is professional desktop software for motion graphics, visual effects, and compositing. It is widely used for titles, explainers, and high-control animation. Publicly, it is sold as part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud — exact list prices change, so treat current Adobe pricing as something to verify on Adobe’s site, not here.

Features (only what we can state cleanly)

  • Cascade: video style matching from a reference video you upload, previews, MP4 export, plan-based export allowances.
  • After Effects: layers, keyframes, effects, 3D, tracking, and a large plugin ecosystem — capabilities Cascade does not claim.
  • Cascade does not import AE projects or run AE plugins.

Pricing

Cascade: Free (limited final exports), Creator $15/month or $150/year, Pro $27/month or $270/year — as shown on the pricing page.

After Effects: sold by Adobe. We do not quote a dollar amount here because Creative Cloud plans change. Compare Adobe’s current public pricing if cost is the deciding factor.

Who should use each

  • Choose Cascade if you finish beats and need a repeatable reel without staffing a motion designer.
  • Choose After Effects if you are delivering custom motion, client VFX, or a look that must be built from scratch.
  • Many teams will use both: AE for the brand pack, Cascade for catalog posting. That is not a failure of either tool.

Limitations (Cascade)

  • Not a general NLE or compositing suite.
  • Not a long-form music video studio.
  • No Spotify Canvas or YouTube/TikTok native publish.
  • Cascade does not post to Instagram. Export the MP4 and post it in Instagram.

FAQ

For producers who need beat-synced short-form clips from their own assets, Cascade is a faster path than opening a blank After Effects timeline. It is not a replacement for custom motion graphics, compositing, or keyframed animation in After Effects.

Create a campaign, upload your beat, add footage or artwork, and optionally upload a reference video file (MP4 or MOV) as a video style. Cascade matches pacing and layout to that style using your assets, then you preview and export an MP4. No footage? Open Portraits, upload the beat, pick a look, and export.

Yes. Finished campaigns export as MP4 (H.264 video with AAC audio), which is what TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts expect. Vertical 9:16 is the default for those placements.

No. You bring the beat, and your footage if you use it. Cascade cuts your clips into ready-to-post reels, or pairs your beat with a Portraits look. It does not replicate or replace your audio or art.

Free includes a limited number of final exports each month, one video style, unlimited previews within fair use, and three Portraits looks (Free exports end with a 2-second Cascade end card). Creator is $15/month or $150/year. Pro is $27/month or $270/year. Community and Refer a friend are available on every plan.
